The Taiwanese intelligence officials have alleged that China is using a lip-synch probe into the top Taiwanese rock band, Mayday, as a political ploy to gain influence in the region. The Chinese Ministry of Culture recently requested the Taiwan Recording Industry Association (TRIA) to investigate the band for lip-synching at their concerts. The intelligence officials claim that the probe is part of an effort by Beijing to pressure Taiwan’s government and also to divert attention away from China’s own human rights record. In a statement, the Taiwanese intelligence officials said: “This is a malicious act to interfere in Taiwan’s domestic affairs and to smear Taiwan’s positive image in the international community.” They also accused Beijing of “ham-fisted diplomacy.” The band has been a popular source of national pride for Taiwan, and the accusations of faking performances have been met with heavy criticism. The Taiwanese intelligence officials have called on the international community to pay attention to China’s actions and not be swayed by them.
